📋 Rules & Insider Tips
🚤 Speed Limits
All boats must slow to 5 mph within 300 feet of shore — an increase from the previous 150 ft rule that took effect in 2023. Quiet Water Areas (marked by buoys) require 5 mph or minimum wake at all times throughout the bay.
🪪 Operator Permits
As of July 2025, anyone born after June 30, 2004 must have a Minnesota Watercraft Operator’s Permit to drive a motorized boat or PWC. The requirement expands to all operators by 2028. One-time fee, online exam.
⚠️ Own Your Wake
Under Minnesota law, wake damage is treated the same as a collision. Be especially mindful near shore, in narrow channels, and when water levels are high. The LMCD’s “Own Your Wake” campaign is actively enforced.
🚀 Public Launch
The main public boat launch is in Spring Park, operated by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Water Patrol. Opens at 6am. On busy holiday weekends, expect a wait — arrive early. Overflow parking available nearby.
